Sofia is Bulgaria’s capital and is located in the western part of the country, at the foot of the striking Vitosha Mountains. With its 1.3 million inhabitants, Sofia is not only the most densely populated Bulgarian city, but also the political and economic center of the country. The international airport, which is around ten kilometers from the city center, is the country’s largest and most important airport. There are numerous sights and attractions for all interests. The Sweta Nedelja Cathedral is situated on the huge Largo Square in the center of the city. Not far from it, the “Borisowa Gradina” park can be found, which is the city’s largest park. One of the most important landmarks of Sofia is the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. Other sights that are worth seeing are the zoological garden, which was opened 120 years ago and is thus the oldest zoo on the Balkan Peninsula.
