Due to the average age of its population, Würzburg in the northwest of Bavaria sees itself as one of the youngest “old” cities of Germany. Being the sixth-largest city of Bavaria with the seat of the Lower Franconia government, the District Office and a bishop’s see, its political and cultural importance in Lower Franconia is indisputable. Furthermore, Würzburg is also a popular university town for students from around the world. The mild climate of the Main valley makes Würzburg the center of Franconian wine. The city is abound with wine taverns and excellent restaurants. The Würzburg Residence (UNESCO world cultural heritage since 1981) with its baroque court garden, the Main-Franconian Museum (Marienberg Fortress) as well as several festivals make Würzburg the cultural center of Franconia. Additionally, Würzburg is easily reachable; it has five motorways and – being an ICE hub – there are fast railway connections (for example around 4 hours from Berlin). The airports Frankfurt/Main, Nuremberg and Stuttgart can be reached in about an hour by car.
