Buenos Aires is Argentina’s capital and with 14.7 million inhabitants by far the largest city in Argentina and even in the world. The city in the east of the country is the cultural and commercial center and located on the Rio de la Plata. The giant harbor installation allows ship connections over the Atlantic and rivers to Paraguay and Brazil, which has contributed to the city’s economic significance. The international airport of Buenos Aires is located about 30 kilometers from the city center. Buenos Aires is particularly renowned for the tango. The special flair of this dance can be felt in many places of the city. Cultural offerings include tango festivals and theatre halls in abundance. The most famous opera house is the Teatro Colón in the government district. Another sight is the Recoleta, an exclusive neighborhood with luxurious French-style villas and palaces, the impressive graveyard and the National Museum of Fine Arts.
